CHANDIGARH: For all those interested in studying innovative themes from the world of design, there���s reason to cheer. In a board of finance meeting held recently, Panjab University decided to introduce a masters degree in lighting design. Besides this, to provide an impetus to research in varied fields, the varsity is also going to start masters in forensic science & criminology and chemical geology.

A masters degree in lighting design would benefit those desirous of pursuing a career in theatre, including designers, industrial designers, interior & product designers, architects and of course theatre artistes. The course would cover topics like aesthetics of light, lighting composition, stage lighting equipment, systems and graphics, lighting the drama, lighting musical theatre and so on.
Those who find DNA testing and finger printing exciting could pursue a masters degree at PU. From forthcoming session, the varsity would launch an MSc in forensic science & criminology. The course is being launched keeping in view demand for experts in fields of forensic science and criminology.
Around 20 seats would be offered by the department and students will be given admission through an entrance exam. The department of anthrolopology is already running a one-year diploma in forensic science & criminology. PU will also introduce masters in chemical geology and commence institute of tourism and hotel management.
In a board of finance meeting attended by vice-chancellor RC Sobti, and UT finance secretary Sanjay Kumar, among others, the total expenditure of Panjab University for the session 2008-09 was estimated to be Rs 269 crore, including a provision for Rs 68 crore for paying augmented salary if recommendations of Sixth Pay Commission are accepted by Panjab government. The expected revenue that will be generated by the varsity is Rs 100 crore and expected deficit is Rs 121 crore.
Board members also sanctioned money for opening an e-learning centre at Panjab University.
